Voice Teacher

Melissa with student Katie Hartman

I have maintained an on-going voice studio since 1980. I teach actors, singers, and dancers at any level how to sing with healthy technique for both belting and legitimate styles. I also work with the injured voice. In addition, I coach students in the dramatic presentation of their material and prepare them for auditions. I am a member of both the National and the Minnesota chapters of NATS (the National Association of Teachers of Singing), and NYSTA (the New York Singing Teachers’ Association). I have had outstanding success with singers at all levels from beginners to experienced professionals.

Classical Training and a Healthy Belt

I was trained classically by New York City Opera star and Chair of the Voice Department at Julliard, Ellen Faull. Using my classical training as a base, I developed a belting technique that enabled me to perform over 800 consecutive performances on Broadway and on tour as Sally Bowles in Cabaret without missing a performance or experiencing any vocal problems. I teach this technique to my students. Singing should neither stress or hurt your throat nor make you hoarse.

My Fundamental Teaching Goals

  1. For all my students, a primary teaching goal is to train musical theatre actor/singers in a healthy classical singing technique.
  2. For my female students who want to belt, a primary goal is to combine their classical technique with a healthy belt technique so when they belt they can make a seamless transition from their legitimate voice to their head resonance-dominated belt voice, without stress or doing harm to their voice.
  3. To ensure all my students understand the lyric-as-text so they can deliver a “truthful” character.
  4. To train all my students so they never hurt their voice or experience pain or discomfort when they sing.

 My Typical Students

Melissa with student Tom Danford

I work with both male and female professional actor/singers as well as actor/singers in training. I also work with dancers who want develop their singing ability to a level that allows them to perform professionally. In addition, I teach the young professional singer (10 years and older) the techniques of proper use of breath support and acoustics.

Past Students’ Professional Success

My students have performed in the Broadway productions of Hairspray, Titanic, Wicked, La Bohème, Angels, The Crucible, Fiddler on the Roof, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and The Pirate Queen. I have also had great success in helping dancers, including Radio City Rockettes and Dance Theatre of Harlem dancers, develop their singing ability so they could perform on Broadway and National Tours including Cats, Grease, 42nd Street, Victor Victoria, White Christmas, West Side Story, and Will Rogers Follies.

Working with the Damaged Voice

I trained with Anat Keidar, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, of New York City, a specialist in Speech Language Vocology and Vocal Health Training. I use Dr. Keidar’s techniques to ensure proper breath support for phonation. More info at www.voiceexpert.net.
