Director

Melissa Hart, director

I received my MFA in Acting and Directing from Florida Atlantic University. I directed The Wild Party (Andrew Lippa Version) at Marymount Manhattan College. While at the University of Florida I directed Cabaret, Twelfth Night, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Godspell, Company, Baby, Little Shop of Horrors, Three Penny Opera, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. I have also directed Guys and Dolls and Annie.

Since moving to Minneapolis/St. Paul, I have directed Surly and Disrespectful at the Open Eye Theatre, Full Gallop with the Les Reines Formidables Theater Company and Yarrrh!! The Lusty, Busty Pirate Musical as part of the 2011 Minnesota Fringe Festival at the Open Eye Theatre, Minneapolis, MN

As a director I actively collaborate with the creative team so they can help me bring my vision of the piece into being. In addition, I help each actor “mine the text” and then encourage them to “trust their journey.” My directing mentors are Zoë Caldwell, Hal Prince, Joe Conaway, and Peter Hunt who all taught me in one way or another to trust the music and believe the text.

Comments on The Wild Party

“I really enjoyed the production! It was obvious the rest of the audience enjoyed it as well! …Kudos to you for great direction.” Judith S.

“Wow! Wow! Wow! The show looked, sounded and played phenomenally well tonight.” Pat S.

“Just wanted to congratulate you on a truly wonderful production! I was really impressed and inspired. The students rose to the occasion with elegance and radiance and power and depth and most definitely heart (or Hart, I suppose, pun intended). And the visual and aural world you all created was magnificent — I was transported.” Ellen O.

“I saw Wild Party and thought it was very well done. The corps was wonderful — I loved all the detailed character work they did. …Also impressed that the vocal production was strong in a piece that might have led people to push too much. Brava.” Debra V.
